Project Overview

The project studies five possible catalytic projects in the city of Mwanza, Tanzania to transform the city into a vibrant tourist hub with a robust economy and quality public facilities. The projects will identify the area demarcated for redevelopment and conduct an economic analysis for the proposed sites and development regulations. The five projects include-
• An Active Recreational Lakefront
• A Multi-modal Transit Hub
• A new Market and City Park
• A BRT Corridor
• And a Mixed-use Riverfront Development.

  • Phase 1 (Completed)

    Phase 1 includes a feasibility study to translate the vision into an implementable plan for the transformation of the city starting from the five listed projects. The first phase includes a spatial and economic analysis for each site along with a mapping of potential investors. The next phase will include engaging the investors for a detailed financial analysis and study of most appropriate financial mechanisms to kick start the projects on the ground with detailed site plans and legal processes.

The direct beneficiaries of this project are the residents of Mwanza living in the city center. The target population includes residents, migrants, people of all ages and income groups and the expected population of the city center by 2035 is projected to be about 100,000.

SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities

The project through the 5 listed developments aims to create sustainable cities and communities by improving the quality of life of the residents by increasing quantity and improving access to public open spaces, economic opportunities like markets, public transportation integrating different modes, increasing community amenities and housing through increased density, creating complete streets with a safe pedestrian realm, and a compact urban form which is sustainable.

What are the key risks, constraints and dependencies related to the project?

The plan is a vision for 2035, so the projects focus on the longer-term impacts. However, the projects can be implemented in phases, allowing smaller, key projects to be implemented first triggering development in the targeted areas.
